Lillian Otieno heads Minnesota's emerging farmers office

By Scout Nelson

In an exciting move for Minnesota’s agricultural community, Lillian Otieno has been named the pioneer director of the state's Emerging Farmers Office. MDA Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey made the announcement, highlighting Lillian's instrumental role in laying the groundwork for this significant office.

Having been associated with the MDA since 2017 and serving as the Emerging Farmers program coordinator since 2021, Otieno brings extensive experience to her new position. As the director, she will be in charge of the office's crucial tasks such as statewide community engagement, managing grant programs, and guiding the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group.

Expressing her gratitude and enthusiasm, Otieno emphasized the importance of inclusivity in agriculture. She stressed on the resilience and innovative spirit of emerging farmers, describing them as vital contributors to the local and regional food ecosystem.

Her past endeavors with the MDA include spearheading outreach for the Produce Safety Program and aiding in the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act. She's known for her association with the Office of Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan during 2021 and 2022.

On November 8, 2023, Otieno will officially accept her new role, and the MDA is seeking her replacement and a grants specialist. Bailey has introduced eight new volunteers to the Emerging Farmers' Working Group, which is responsible for guiding the MDA and Minnesota Legislature to improve the prospects of farmers facing traditional barriers.

The essence of the Emerging Farmers initiative is inclusivity, encompassing a broad spectrum of individuals including women, veterans, young farmers, LGBTQIA+ members, and urban agriculturists, to name a few. This initiative, managed by the MDA staff, prioritizes a balanced representation from all backgrounds.
