MDA Empowers Minnesota Communities with Local Food Grants

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) continues to invest in local and regional food systems with the Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) Program, awarding $3.53 million in grants to 33 organizations, local governments, and tribal nations across the state. Aimed at supporting socially disadvantaged farmers and addressing food insecurity in underserved communities, these grants are part of Governor Mike DeWine's commitment to strengthening Minnesota's agricultural landscape.

Through the LFPA Program, recipients purchase local food from farmers and distribute it at no cost to communities in need, fostering economic growth and food security. With the first round of grants successfully distributed, the MDA has announced a second round, inviting applications until May 20, 2024. Interested parties can request between $20,000 and $125,000 to support their local food initiatives.

To assist potential applicants, the MDA is hosting virtual information sessions on May 1 and May 2, 2024, providing insights into the LFPA Program and application process. Attendees can register for these sessions on the MDA website.

The first round of grants attracted considerable interest, with the MDA receiving 50 proposals totaling nearly $5.9 million in funding requests. Among the recipients are a diverse array of organizations, including community centers, farmers' markets, and tribal nations, reflecting the program's broad impact across Minnesota.

Supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service, the LFPA Program aligns with the American Rescue Plan's goals of enhancing food and agricultural supply chain resilience. With these grants, the MDA is empowering local communities to build sustainable and equitable food systems, ensuring that all Minnesotans have access to fresh, locally sourced produce.

For more information on the LFPA Program and to apply for the second round of grants, visit the MDA website. Join the effort to strengthen Minnesota's local food networks and promote food security for all residents.
