Minnesota DNR Urges Harvesters to Wait for Ripe Wild Rice

As the Minnesota wild rice harvest season begins on Aug. 15, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding harvesters that wild rice must be fully ripe before it can be legally harvested. The agency emphasizes that the season opener does not guarantee that rice across the state is ready for collection.

Minnesota contains the largest amount of naturally growing wild rice in the United States, with significant acreage located in Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Itasca, and St. Louis counties. Beyond its economic value, wild rice is an important component of wetland ecosystems and supports a range of wildlife species.

Wild rice also holds cultural importance for Indigenous communities in Minnesota, where it is known as manoomin in Ojibwe and psíŋ in Dakota. Protecting healthy wild rice stands remains a priority for both environmental conservation and cultural preservation.

According to the Minnesota DNR, harvesters are responsible for ensuring rice is mature before harvesting. Because ripeness can vary within the same lake or wetland, the agency encourages ongoing field checks throughout the season.

The DNR advises using several indicators to determine harvest readiness. Mature wild rice typically has brown stems and leaves above the water, kernels that snap open instead of bending, and seeds that fall easily from the plant when lightly brushed.

Improper harvesting methods can damage rice plants and reduce future production. Allowing rice to fully mature helps ensure seed availability for future growth while also supporting wildlife and sustainable harvest opportunities.

Early observations from the Minnesota DNR and tribal biologists indicate fair to excellent wild rice conditions across central and northern Minnesota. However, lower water levels caused by recent drought conditions may make some rice beds more difficult to access this season.

The wild rice harvest season will continue through the end of September, with officials encouraging harvesters to follow ripeness guidelines to protect Minnesota's valuable wild rice resources.
