Minnesota Farmer Bai Vue Thrives Through Agrisolar

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota farmer Bai Vue has built a farming operation that combines family traditions, environmental stewardship, and sustainable agriculture. He grows vegetables with his family at an agrisolar site in Big Lake, where crops are cultivated beneath solar panels operated through partnerships involving Big River Farms, U.S. Solar, and Connexus Energy.

Vue's farming philosophy reflects both his cultural heritage and commitment to responsible food production. His family focuses on sustainable growing practices while working to protect natural resources and support local communities.

The family's agricultural journey began with nearly 15 years of gardening in community plots before transitioning to commercial farming. Led by their mother, Bao Vue, they gradually established themselves within Minnesota's local food system through dedication and hard work.

Support from The Good Acre, a nonprofit food hub in St. Paul, has helped the family expand its market opportunities. Through the Local Economic Accelerator For Farmers (LEAFF) program, Vue has gained access to training and resources that help small-scale farmers enter wholesale markets.

The LEAFF program also creates opportunities for growers to provide fresh produce to hunger-relief organizations. For Vue, giving back is especially meaningful because his family understands the challenges many food-insecure families face.

Food safety also plays a critical role in the farm's success. Annalisa Hultberg, a University of Minnesota Extension educator, works with producers like Vue to develop food safety plans that help protect consumers and support business growth.

The agrisolar site offers several agricultural benefits. Solar panels provide shade for heat-sensitive crops, reduce wind exposure, and create favorable growing conditions while generating renewable energy.

According to The Food Group's agrisolar team, combining energy production with food production allows the land to serve multiple purposes. The approach supports both agricultural sustainability and renewable energy development.

Despite challenges such as drought and limited water availability, Vue remains committed to environmentally friendly farming methods. He avoids synthetic pesticides and works closely with family members to manage weeds and pests through sustainable practices.

Through partnerships with University of Minnesota Extension, The Good Acre, and Big River Farms, Vue continues to demonstrate how small family farms can successfully combine sustainable agriculture, food security, and renewable energy.
