Minnesota Wolf Debate Takes Center Stage in New Film

Minnesota Wolf Debate Takes Center Stage in New Film

By Scout Nelson

Hunters for Hunters released a new documentary, Fed to the Wolves, examining how Minnesota’s wolf population and wildlife-management policies affect livestock producers, pet owners, hunters and rural communities.

The documentary, released online October 2, 2026, focuses on firsthand accounts from people living and working in areas where wolves are present. According to Hunters for Hunters, these perspectives have received limited attention in the broader discussion surrounding wolf management.

The film addresses several concerns raised by rural residents, including livestock and pet losses attributed to wolves, changes in deer populations, impacts on agricultural livelihoods, private property rights and the role of state and federal agencies in wildlife management.

Under federal protections currently governing wolves in Minnesota, property owners generally cannot kill a wolf simply to protect livestock or pets. Hunters for Hunters argues that this situation raises broader questions about property rights, government responsibilities and who is ultimately affected by wildlife-management decisions.

We're exposing the truth about wolf depredation in Minnesota," said Steve Porter, Board Member of Hunters for Hunters. "For years, people living with this problem have felt that their experiences were being dismissed while the crisis around them continued to grow."

The organization says the documentary is intended to provide a platform for ranchers, pet owners, hunters, and other rural residents to describe their experiences directly. It also encourages people throughout Minnesota, including those in urban communities, to consider how wildlife policies affect residents who live in wolf country.

Rather than concentrating only on wolves, the film explores the intersection of wildlife policy, agriculture, private property, and rural livelihoods. Hunters for Hunters also views wolf management as an issue voters should consider when evaluating candidates for state and federal office.

The group is asking candidates and elected officials to explain their positions on wolf-management authority, livestock protection, hunting, agriculture and property rights.

"This documentary is about more than wolves," Porter said. "It is about whether the people who live on the land and deal with the consequences of these policies will have a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect their property, their animals and their way of life."
