Corn for grain production in Minnesota for 2022 was estimated at 1.46 billion bushels, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production 2022 Summary. Current year production was up 5 percent from the previous year's 1.39 billion bushels. Minnesota's corn for grain yield was estimated at 195.0 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 7.49 million acres, 350,000 acres below 2021. Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 was estimated at 8.00 million acres.
Corn for silage production was estimated at 9.68 million tons, up 13 percent from 2021. The silage yield estimate of 21.5 tons per acre was up 2.5 tons per acre from 2021. Producers harvested 450,000 acres of corn for silage, unchanged from 2021.
Soybean production was estimated at 370 million bushels in 2022. This was up 4 percent from last year's 356 million bushels. The Minnesota soybean crop yielded 50.0 bushels per acre in 2022. The harvested acreage of 7.39 million was down 190,000 acres from 2021. Soybean planted acreage, at 7.45 million, was down 200,000 acres from 2021.
All hay production for the state was estimated at 3.20 million tons, up 37 percent from the 2.33 million tons produced in 2021. Producers averaged 2.62 tons per acre, up 0.48 tons per acre from 2021. All hay harvested acres were estimated at 1.22 million acres, up 130,000 acres from 2021.
Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay production was estimated at 1.98 million tons, up 14 percent from 2021. Producers averaged 3.10 tons per acre, up 0.50 tons per acre from 2021. Harvested acres were down 30,000 from last year, to 640,000 acres. Minnesota producers seeded 135,000 acres of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures in 2022, up 35 percent from 2021.
Other hay production was estimated at 1.22 million tons, up 107 percent from 2021. Producers averaged 2.10 tons per acre, up 0.70 tons from the 2021 yield. Harvested acres of other hay, at 580,000, were up 160,000 acres from 2021.
Sugarbeet production was estimated at 11.1 million tons, down 10 percent from 2021. Producers averaged 25.7 tons per acre, down 5.3 tons from 2021. Producers harvested 431,000 acres, up 35,000 acres from 2021.
Oil sunflower production was estimated at 159 million pounds, up 78 percent from 2021. Producers averaged 2,370 pounds per acre, up 41 percent from 2021. Oil sunflower harvested area was 67,000 acres. Non-oil sunflower production was estimated at 16.0 million pounds, up 209 percent from 2021. Yield was estimated at 2,000 pounds per acre, up 8 percent from 2021. Area harvested for non-oil sunflowers was 8,000 acres.
