Sustainable Stewardship for Small Farms

Sustainable Stewardship for Small Farms

By Scout Nelson

University of Minnesota Extension in partnership with the Pine County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a community focused event designed to encourage open discussion on sustainable land stewardship practices. The event is titled Conservation Conversations Small Farms and Land Stewardship. It will take place on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from 4 30 to 6 30 p m Central time.

This audience led discussion will focus on practical and accessible conservation topics relevant to small farms, gardens, and homesteads. Topics of discussion include managing farm composting systems, incorporating fruit nuts or other trees, creating bee lawns, and pollinator-friendly plantings that cover crops in garden systems.

During the session, participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, questions, and experiences. In addition to learning from one another, participants can also gain insight into conservation strategies that promote biodiversity, soil health, and long-term land productivity through the informal discussion format.

The event is intended for specialty crop producers, hobbyists, gardeners, and homesteaders. No prior experience is required, and the information will be presented in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. The goal is to help participants explore conservation practices that can be applied at various scales, regardless of land size.

University of Minnesota Extension is committed to equal access for all participants. Individuals requiring accommodations are encouraged to contact the event organizer at least two weeks prior to the event's start date. Requests submitted after this period will be honored when possible.

The program will be delivered in English. Interpreter services may be available upon advance request.
