The University of Minnesota Extension and the McLeod County Extension Master Gardeners are offering the Gardening Knowledge for Free workshop series again in late 2026. The free educational program is designed to help gardeners improve their landscapes through practical, research-based gardening information.
The workshops will be held at the McLeod County Fairgrounds Meeting Room in Hutchinson, Minnesota, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on selected dates in October and November. Sessions will be led by experienced Extension Master Gardeners and focus on common gardening challenges.
The first workshop, scheduled for October,26,2026 will focus on gardening in shaded areas. Presenters Debbie and Joyce will explain different types of shade, recommend plants suited for low-light conditions, and share tips for creating attractive shade gardens.
The second workshop, set for November,16,2026 will address potentially invasive garden plants. Participants will learn about species that can spread aggressively in home landscapes and explore methods for identification, containment, and removal.
The presentation will cover plants such as Solomon's seal, gooseneck loosestrife, perennial vinca, lily of the valley, common yarrow, and black locust. Photographs and practical management strategies will be included to help gardeners address existing plant issues.
Attendance is free, but registration is required because space is limited to 40 participants. Interested individuals can register online or contact the McLeod County Extension office for additional information.
The University of Minnesota Extension encourages attendees needing accommodations to contact organizers at least two weeks before the event. The workshops will be presented in English, and interpreter services may be available upon request.
