University of Minnesota Updates Fall Manure Guidelines

University of Minnesota Updates Fall Manure Guidelines

By Scout Nelson

As fall manure application season begins in Minnesota, University of Minnesota Extension is encouraging farmers to review updated nutrient management recommendations. Experts recently discussed key manure management topics through the Nutrient Management Podcast.

One major focus is the updated manure application rate guidelines for corn-corn and corn-soybean rotations. The revised recommendations are intended to improve nutrient management accuracy and help producers maximize crop productivity while reducing nutrient losses.

Experts also highlighted the potential impact of a forecasted Super El NiƱo on fall manure management decisions. Farmers are encouraged to monitor weather conditions closely, as changes in temperature and precipitation can affect application timing, nutrient availability, and runoff risks.

Another important update involves ManureDB, the online database that tracks manure nutrient content and variability. A large new dataset has been added, providing more comprehensive information to help farmers make informed nutrient management decisions.

The expanded database may improve the accuracy of nutrient estimates and support better fertilizer planning. Extension specialists also discussed how the data can help producers understand manure characteristics across different livestock systems.

The podcast also highlights ongoing on-farm research projects across Minnesota. Researchers are working with farmers to evaluate nutrient management practices and gather data under real-world field conditions.

In addition, the episode includes information about training and recertification opportunities for manure management professionals. These programs help participants stay current on research findings, regulations, and best management practices.

Through research, education, and farmer collaboration, University of Minnesota Extension continues to promote efficient nutrient use, improved crop production, and environmentally responsible manure management across Minnesota agriculture.
