The University of Minnesota Extension is inviting middle school students to explore career opportunities in agriculture through its Roots to Routes – Exploring Your Ag Future program in Waseca County. The six-part series is designed primarily for students in grades 6-8 and highlights the many careers available beyond traditional farming.
Running from November 2026 through April 2027, the program will offer hands-on activities, interactive learning experiences, and opportunities to connect with professionals in agriculture, food systems, and natural resources. Participants will explore how interests in science, technology, business, leadership, and creativity can lead to careers in the agricultural sector.
Activities will include making ice cream, testing soil health, programming precision agriculture drones, and practicing veterinary skills. Students will also learn about robotics, satellite mapping, biotechnology, and other technologies transforming modern agriculture.
The program features an Ag Shark Tank challenge, where participants will develop, brand, and present their own agricultural product ideas. Students will also complete a My Ag Passport, helping them track career interests, skills, and educational goals.
Participants will meet young professionals, local business owners, and 4-H and FFA leaders working in agriculture. These interactions are designed to provide insight into career pathways and future educational opportunities.
The first session is scheduled for November 23, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the East Annex Meeting Room. The opening session, Ag is More Than Farming & Agribusiness, will introduce careers such as agricultural communicator, agricultural marketer, and supply chain manager.
Future sessions will focus on animal science and health, food science and innovation, high-tech agriculture and natural resources, plant science and hydroponics, and a career showcase featuring local industry professionals.
The program is offered free of charge, providing youth with an opportunity to learn more about agriculture and related industries.
