Seeking Farm Answers, Craig Pushes Administration on Trade
Minnesota Ag Connection - 05/24/2019

U.S. Rep. Angie Craig reiterated her call for trade policies that prioritize economic opportunity for Minnesota farmers and small business owners.

Craig spoke to USDA officials ahead of an announcement of a trade aid package that would offer relief to farmers affected by an escalating trade war. Craig pushed the Administration to put forward a coherent trade strategy that protects international market share and opens new opportunities for Minnesota agriculture.

"I am committed to standing up for family farmers across my district. While I respect the USDA's attempt to reduce the impact this trade war will have on farmers, this continued market volatility has gone on for far too long. Farmers have spent years building these markets, and we must demand a national trade agenda that protects their investments," said Craig, "I've heard from farmers across my district that they are tired of the uncertainty, and it's clear that this Administration has no plan to get us out of this self-inflicted trade war with China. This Administration cannot continue to put off repairing our damaged relationships with critical trade partners while our agriculture markets suffer. Our farmers are resilient and hardworking people who just want an opportunity to sell in a fair market at a fair price."

In addition to speaking to the Administration, Rep. Craig also sent a letter to U.S. Trade Rep Lighthizer urging him to stop escalating Chinese tariffs that are doing serious damage to farmers and businesses across the country. She also spoke at a House Small Business Committee press conference on the need for responsible, economically sound trade policies.

Since being sworn in, Rep. Craig has made supporting family farmers a priority for her office. She has

- Been named to the House Agriculture Committee,

- Cosponsored the Biodiesel Tax Credit Extension Act of 2019 to protect Minnesota's biodiesel industry and Minnesota soybean markets,

- Led a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Lighthizer pushing for the inclusion of agriculture in trade negotiations with the European Union to keep markets open for American farm products,

- Cosponsored the Family Farmer Relief Act of 2019 to help farmers restructure their debt,

- Joined a bipartisan letter to urge the Administration to end its unfair practice of issuing small refinery waivers to big oil companies, which is a handout to big oil companies on the backs of family farmers,

- Held several listening sessions with farmers in the Second District to discuss the need for trade negotiations, timely implementation of the dairy program, and expansion of mental health resources in rural areas.
