Smith Highlights Commitment to Minnesota Farmers
Minnesota Ag Connection - 08/08/2018

At Tuesday's Farmfest debate, U.S. Senator Tina Smith highlighted her strong commitment to Minnesota farmers and rural communities, including her work on the Agriculture Committee and on the Senate Farm Bill that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

"Agriculture is our history, but it is also our future. The 73,000 farms in Minnesota put food on the table and fuel in the tank for millions of people around the world," said Smith said during the debate, "I work for you, and I am willing to go anywhere and do anything and work with anybody who wants to help advance Minnesota agricultural and rural communities."

In the Senate Farm Bill, Smith was proud to have authored and championed several provisions that will support farmers and ranchers across Minnesota. Specifically, she authored a road map for renewable energy programs, championed support for beginning and nontraditional farmers, and helped preserve the sugar program -- which is essential to the Red River Valley. She also championed new investments in trade promotion programs that will help open markets for farmers and ranchers.

During the debate, Smith talked about her work in the U.S. Senate to ensure that all Minnesotans have the freedom and opportunity to live the lives they want to live, such as making sure rural communities have access to high-quality health care they can afford or expanding access to reliable broadband. Smith serves on the Rural Caucus and she is pushing to include a Rural Health Liaison at the Department of Agriculture to better coordinate health resources for rural communities and for more investments in telehealth -- which allows health experts to monitor patients in their homes--so that people don't have to travel as far to talk with a doctor.

In her first seven months as senator, Smith has held over 100 meetings, roundtables and community events across the state. As she enters the last week until the DFL Primary Election on Aug. 14, Sen. Smith will continue talking with Minnesotans about the issues that matter in their lives and bring their voices with her back to Washington.
