The University of Minnesota will recognize 86 Farm Families of the Year during the 2026 Farm Family of the Year ceremony at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, during the annual Minnesota Farmfest near Redwood Falls. The event will take place at the Gilfillan Estate in the Wick Buildings Farmfest Center and celebrates farm families who make important contributions to agriculture across the state.
The honored families represent many different types of farming. Their operations include traditional grain and livestock farms as well as businesses that grow fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other specialty crops. Some families also operate community-based agricultural ventures that support local food systems and rural economies.
The Farm Families of the Year are selected by local University of Minnesota Extension committees in counties throughout Minnesota. Families are chosen based on their commitment to agriculture, community leadership, innovation, and their efforts to strengthen farming for future generations.
“This year's Farm Families of the Year reflect the impressive strength and incredible variety of agriculture in our state," said Extension Dean Bev Durgan. "The University of Minnesota is proud to honor these families and their innovation and dedication to Minnesota agriculture."
The annual recognition highlights the important role farm families play in producing food, protecting natural resources, supporting rural communities, and helping agriculture continue to grow. Their work demonstrates the diversity of Minnesota agriculture and the many ways farming contributes to the state's economy and quality of life.
To watch stories about each honored family visit the University of Minnesota. News organizations may also request contact information for many of the families. Photos of families attending the ceremony will be added to the university's website later in August.
The Farm Family of the Year program continues to recognize the hard work, dedication, and achievements of farming families across Minnesota.
