Barley council termination vote scheduled December 12

Barley council termination vote scheduled December 12

By Scout Nelson

The future of the Minnesota Barley Research and Promotion Council will be decided on December 12, 2024, when barley producers vote to determine its continuation. This vote follows a petition received by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) on November 22, 2024, signed by more than 10% of the state’s barley producers.

The Minnesota Barley Research and Promotion Council was established in 1990 to support the barley industry through agricultural research and promotion.

For decades, it has focused on advancing knowledge and fostering development within the sector. However, a decrease in barley production has led some producers to question its relevance, prompting the petition to terminate the Council.

In compliance with the petition, the MDA is holding a vote to decide the Council’s future. Eligible voters include producers who shared directly in the risk of loss from barley production during the current or preceding marketing year.

Voting Information

Date: December 12, 2024

Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon

Location: Prairie Grains Conference front desk, Alerus Center, 1200 S 42nd St, Grand Forks, ND

The outcome of the vote will determine whether the Council continues its mission to support Minnesota’s barley producers or ceases operations. For more details, contact the Minnesota Department of Agriculture at 651-201-6013.

This decision reflects the evolving dynamics of Minnesota’s agricultural sector, with producers playing a vital role in shaping its future.
