Beef Dairy Event Explores Calf Management

Beef Dairy Event Explores Calf Management

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Dairy Initiative are hosting the Beef x Dairy Insights Program in Greenwald, Minnesota, on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Central time at the Greenwald Pub, 310 1st Ave N.

The event is free and open to dairy producers, calf growers, and industry professionals interested in beef-sired calf decision-making.

With calf prices reaching record highs, producers are encouraged to attend and learn how to maximize profitability and improve calf performance. The program will focus on identifying which traits offer the highest returns, what beef breeds produce superior dairy-cross calves, and how to manage calves effectively for long-term benefits.

Extension dairy specialist Brad Heins will share his research findings on beef sire breed performance, carcass quality, and economic outcomes. His presentation will also include insights from studies on early calf nutrition and its effects on long-term growth and health.

Extension beef educator Melissa Runck will discuss strategies for selecting beef sires that enhance profitability, highlight market trends, return-on-investment opportunities, and value optimization for beef-dairy cross calves.

The event will provide practical knowledge for producers aiming to increase the market value of their calves and gain a better understanding of breed selection and management. Lunch will be provided, along with an opportunity to network with peers and experts.

Interested participants are encouraged to register online or by contacting the Stearns County Extension Office at 320-255-6169. The event will be conducted in English, with interpreter services available upon request.

The University of Minnesota Extension ensures equal participation for all attendees and encourages early accommodation requests for individuals with disabilities.
