Minnesota Soybean Expands Exports to Europe

Minnesota Soybean Expands Exports to Europe

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota Soybean Growers Association leaders are set to participate in a European trade mission aimed at expanding international markets and highlighting Minnesota’s agricultural innovation.

The delegation will visit Switzerland and Germany from November 15 to 21, 2025, as part of a broader effort to strengthen global trade partnerships.

The mission, led by Governor Tim Walz and Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen, will include representatives from the agriculture, medical technology, cleantech, and higher education sectors.

The group will travel through Zürich, Düsseldorf, and Berlin, meeting with business and government leaders to promote Minnesota’s export potential and attract international investment.

“I’m excited to explore and learn more about agriculture in Europe,” said the association’s president. “It’s also a great opportunity to promote and talk about Minnesota agriculture and how we raise quality, sustainable crops.”

The initiative aims to expand agricultural exports, particularly soybeans, which represent a key part of Minnesota’s economy. Germany, Minnesota’s eighth-largest export market, imported $649 million in goods in 2024 and remains one of the world’s largest soybean importers, with over $1 billion in annual purchases. Switzerland follows as the 22nd largest export market, valued at $232 million.

“As some of the largest and most innovative economies in the world, Germany and Switzerland both offer excellent opportunities for Minnesota businesses to expand their exports,” Governor Walz said.

Commissioner Petersen added, “Germany and Switzerland value high-quality agricultural products and we see great opportunity for Minnesota’s farmers in these markets.”

The itinerary includes visits to key agricultural and industrial partners such as Cargill, the German Farmers Association, and Syngenta. The delegation will also engage with trade officials to explore new market opportunities for soy-based products and renewable energy partnerships.

“There are a lot of opportunities for growth in not just Germany, but the entire EU,” the association’s president said. “I’m excited to have conversations with European leaders while promoting Minnesota soybeans.”
