Farmstands Help Farmers Reach More Customers

Farmstands Help Farmers Reach More Customers

By Scout Nelson

Farmstands are becoming an effective way for small farmers to sell fresh produce while saving time and building stronger relationships with local customers. Instead of spending extra hours at markets or arranging deliveries, many growers are using simple roadside stands and self-service displays to make fresh food more available in their communities.

Running a small farm requires farmers to handle many responsibilities every day. In addition to growing crops, they also harvest, clean, package, market, and sell their products while managing business records and finances. After completing these daily tasks, finding time to sell produce can become another major challenge.

Minnesota farmer Erik Heimark is among the growers exploring farmstands as a practical way to reach customers. These sales locations can be simple roadside sheds, small buildings, or even repurposed hay wagons that display fresh fruits and vegetables. Farmstands allow customers to purchase produce directly from the farm while giving growers greater flexibility.

Zachary Paige coordinates sustainable agriculture programming for the University of Minnesota Extension's Northwest Regional Sustainable Development Partnership. As a farmer and founder of North Circle Seeds, Paige understands the time pressures faced by small vegetable producers. His experience has shown that farmstands remain an underused marketing tool with strong potential for local farms.

To support producers, Paige and several partner organizations worked closely with specialty crop farmers to develop practical resources that make direct marketing easier. These resources include a farmstand marketing guide, consumer survey findings, and construction blueprints that help farmers build affordable and effective sales locations.

These tools are designed to strengthen farm businesses while improving access to fresh, locally grown food. Farmstands reduce the amount of time farmers spend selling products and create convenient shopping opportunities for consumers seeking fresh produce close to home.

As more growers adopt direct-to-consumer marketing, farmstands continue providing a simple, flexible, and affordable solution that benefits both farmers and their communities.
