Minnesota educators will have new opportunities this summer to strengthen agricultural learning in classrooms through two hands-on programs organized by Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC). The educational experiences are designed to help K-12 teachers connect students with agriculture, food systems, and the natural environment through practical learning activities and real-world experiences.
One of the featured programs is the first Growing Minds Conference, which will take place July 27–28 at St. Paul College in St. Paul, Minnesota. The event is being hosted jointly by MAITC and Wisconsin Agriculture in the Classroom. Organizers say the conference will provide teachers with interactive sessions, collaboration opportunities, and practical ideas for incorporating agriculture into subjects such as science, language arts, social studies, health, and nutrition.
Educators will also have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Teacher Tour on July 15 in Little Falls, Minnesota. The one-day event will provide a closer look at food production and agricultural partnerships in Central Minnesota. Participants will visit Smude Sunflower Farm, Smude Angus Farm, and Sprout MN Food Hub to better understand how agricultural products move from farms to schools and communities.
The Summer Teacher Tour will include hands-on activities, networking opportunities with fellow educators, and eight continuing education units. Organizers say the experience is open to all K-12 educators, regardless of previous agricultural knowledge or teaching experience.
“Attendees of either the Growing Minds Conference or the Summer Teacher Tour will meet the people behind the food we eat, ask questions, and experience agriculture firsthand,” said Sue Knott, Education Specialist for MAITC. “These experiences give educators something real to bring back to their classrooms, helping students better understand where their food comes from and how agriculture connects to their everyday lives.”
The Growing Minds Conference is open to teachers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and surrounding states. Registration costs $100 and includes one tour along with breakfast and lunch on both days. The Summer Teacher Tour costs $50 and includes lunch. Organizers encourage early registration because space is limited.
Teachers interested in learning more can register through Growing Minds Conference Registration and Summer Teacher Tour Information.
MAITC is a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the MAITC Foundation focused on improving agricultural literacy through K-12 education programs.
