High Tunnel Training Field Days

High Tunnel Training Field Days

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota Extension fruit and vegetable team, along with The Grossman Lab, is organizing a series of hands-on high tunnel field days throughout the growing season. These events aim to help participants learn practical and timely skills needed to manage high tunnels effectively and improve vegetable production.

The first session will be held on April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a farm in Pierz, Minnesota. Participants will learn how to install plastic on a high tunnel and understand basic construction practices. A backup date is scheduled in case of poor weather conditions. Lunch will also be provided during this session.

On May 14 in St. Paul, the focus will shift to irrigation systems, plant nutrition, and field preparation. Participants will explore irrigation setup, common challenges, and methods to prepare soil using both traditional and reduced tillage techniques. This session will also cover how to add nutrients to improve soil health.

The June 16 session will provide training on pruning, trellising, and problem scouting. Participants will practice handling crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers. They will also learn how to identify plant problems early and manage them effectively to avoid crop losses.

On July 7, the training will focus on postharvest handling. Participants will learn proper washing, packing, and cooling techniques to maintain vegetable quality and safety. Demonstrations will include different washing tools and cooling systems.

The final session on August 7 will take place in Afton, Minnesota. It will cover summer cover crops and succession planting to support year-round vegetable production and soil health.

Participants are encouraged to bring plant samples for diagnosis by the plant disease clinic. Each event costs $10, with flexible payment options available. Registration can be completed here. These workshops are supported by a USDA-funded initiative and aim to make learning accessible to all growers.
