Honoring Minnesota's agricultural legacy- Apply for the Century Farm Program

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota families with farms standing strong for a century or more are invited to participate in the prestigious 2024 Century Farm Program. Developed by the Minnesota State Fair in partnership with the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, this program aims to recognize and promote agriculture while paying tribute to family farms that have played a vital role in the state's history. Since its establishment in 1976, more than 11,000 farms have received this esteemed honor.

A Century Farm is acknowledged when it meets three key criteria:

  • The farm must be at least 100 years old, verified through authentic land records.
  • It should have a continuous family ownership history for at least a century, with no requirement for continuous residence on the farm.
  • The farm should encompass at least 50 acres and actively engage in agricultural production.

Families meeting these requirements will be presented with a commemorative certificate signed by Governor Tim Walz, State Fair Board of Managers President Wally Wichmann, and Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation President Dan Glessing. Additionally, a special outdoor sign designating Century Farm status will be awarded.

Interested families can access application forms online at mnstatefair.org/about-the-fair/awards-and-recognition/ or fbmn.org, by contacting the State Fair at 651-288-4417, or through county extension offices statewide. The deadline for submissions is Monday, March 4, with the announcement of recipients expected in the spring. Families previously recognized need not reapply.

Visit the Minnesota Farm Bureau exhibit during the 2024 Minnesota State Fair for more information on the Century Farm Program. An online Century Farm database is also accessible at fbmn.org.

The Minnesota State Fair, renowned as one of the world's largest expositions, showcases the finest in Minnesota's agriculture, art, and industry. Running from August 22 through Labor Day, September 2, the 2024 Minnesota State Fair promises 12 days of festivities.

As a staunch advocate for Minnesota's agricultural vitality, the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation amplifies its members' voices through engagement, grassroots advocacy, and agricultural awareness.
