Honoring U of M's Dairy Expert

Honoring U of M's Dairy Expert

By Scout Nelson

For nearly four decades, Les Hansen has served as a cornerstone of the University of Minnesota’s dairy program, nurturing a passion for dairy genetics and student development. As he approaches retirement, his impact on the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) is undeniable, leaving a void that colleagues and students feel deeply.

Hansen’s career at the University began 43 years ago when he joined the faculty as a professor of Animal Science. His commitment to the field extended beyond the classroom, influencing significant advancements in dairy cattle genetics research.

However, Hansen’s most notable contributions may be his dedication to student development through the university’s dairy judging team, which he has led for 38 years.

Under his guidance, the team has excelled nationally, clinching several awards including four national titles at the World Dairy Expo in the last decade. This success is a testament to Hansen’s ability to blend scientific knowledge with practical application, preparing students not only for competitions but for future careers in agriculture.

Beyond the awards, Hansen's approach to education has been holistic. Growing up on a dairy farm himself, he brought firsthand experience and a personal touch to his teaching, emphasizing the importance of clear communication—a skill he honed during his early career in public relations. His teams are known for their exceptional oral presentations, a direct reflection of his emphasis on effective communication.

As Hansen prepares to retire, his legacy at CFANS is highlighted by his relentless pursuit of knowledge and his deep commitment to his students. Mike Schutz, head of the Department of Animal Science, praises Hansen for being “a magnificent champion for his students and an ardent supporter of dairy youth development.”

His career may be concluding, but the impacts of his work will resonate for many years, inspiring future generations to pursue passions in dairy genetics and communication with the same fervor Hansen displayed throughout his distinguished tenure.
