Livestock Care Training for 4-H Youth

Livestock Care Training for 4-H Youth

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota Extension and Pope County 4-H are offering an in-person Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA & E) training program for youth interested in livestock production and responsible animal care. The training will take place on June 2, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The 3-hour educational session will help young livestock producers learn important practices related to responsible animal care, management, and industry standards. Youth who complete the program will receive LQA & E certification, which will remain valid for three years from the date of the training.

The program is designed for youth in grade 6 and above who need certification to participate in livestock projects and programs. Livestock Quality Assurance training helps young producers understand how proper care, nutrition, and management affect both animal welfare and food safety.

Through this training, participants will learn the importance of handling livestock responsibly, following industry guidelines, and maintaining good animal health. These skills are important for youth who raise livestock through 4-H programs or other agricultural activities.

The cost of the program is $5 for youth who are not members of Pope County 4-H. Youth who are part of the Pope County 4-H program may attend the training free of charge. The fee will be collected at the door during the event.

Participants must register for the program before the deadline. Registration is required by May 26, 2026, while the certification program itself will be held on June 2.

The exact location of the training event will be announced later. Participants will receive additional details after registering for the program.

The University of Minnesota Extension supports the program and aims to provide equal opportunities for participation in all educational activities. Individuals who require accommodation due to disabilities are encouraged to contact the event organizers at least two weeks before the event. Requests submitted later will be accommodated whenever possible.

The training will be conducted in English. Interpreter services may also be available if requested in advance.

Programs like Livestock Quality Assurance training play an important role in preparing young people for future careers in agriculture. By learning responsible livestock management practices early, youth can develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the livestock industry.
