Livestock Workshop Prepares Youth for Fair

Livestock Workshop Prepares Youth for Fair

By Scout Nelson

The Road to the Ring 4-H Livestock Workshop provides a valuable learning opportunity for young participants who want to improve their livestock skills. This event focuses on teaching best practices for preparing animals for fair competitions. It offers hands-on experience in animal care, handling, and showmanship.

Participants learn a variety of important topics based on the livestock species they choose. These topics include training animals to lead, using safe handling methods, and understanding what to expect during judging. The workshop also covers feeding strategies, essential supplies, and biosecurity practices to keep animals healthy.

Attendees can choose up to three livestock species to focus on. Options include dairy cattle, beef or dairy steer, meat goat, sheep, rabbit, and poultry. This flexibility allows participants to explore different animals and gain a wider range of skills.

The workshop is open to all current 4-H members. It is especially helpful for beginners and those with intermediate experience. Participants of any age or grade can join and benefit from the training. Even those who already have experience with one type of animal can use this opportunity to learn about another species.

To ensure safety, participants should wear proper clothing. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required. Those working with smaller animals like rabbits or poultry should also bring a long-sleeved shirt for safe handling.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central time at the Stearns County Fairgrounds in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. The workshop is free of cost, making it accessible to all interested participants. Registration is required and must be completed by May 15, 2026.

The program also supports equal participation. Accommodation services are available for individuals with disabilities if requested in advance. Interpreter services may also be arranged.

This workshop helps young learners build confidence, improve skills, and prepare for success in livestock exhibitions.
