The emerald ash borer (EAB) has been spotted for the first time in Lyon County, according to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA). With this discovery, Lyon County became the 41st county in the state to be affected by EAB.
The detection came to light when a concerned homeowner in Marshall reported a possible EAB infestation to the city. Following an inspection by the city superintendent, signs of EAB galleries were identified, prompting MDA involvement. MDA staff located EAB larvae and collected samples, which were subsequently confirmed as emerald ash borer by federal identification.
First detected in Minnesota in 2009, EAB poses a significant threat to ash trees as the larvae tunnel under the bark, feeding on the tree's nutrient-carrying tissues. Infested trees often exhibit multiple signs, including woodpecker activity and split bark with distinct S-shaped galleries.
In response to the Lyon County infestation, an emergency quarantine has been implemented by the MDA. This quarantine restricts the movement of firewood and ash materials out of the area, aiming to prevent further spread of the destructive insect.
To provide vital information and address concerns, the MDA will conduct a virtual informational meeting on July 19, 2023. Experts from the MDA will deliver a presentation and engage in a question-and-answer session. Residents and tree care professionals in Lyon County are encouraged to register for the event at https://www.mda.state.mn.us/eab
The MDA is seeking public input on the proposal to add Lyon County's emergency quarantine to the state's formal quarantine. Feedback on the proposed formal quarantine can be submitted until August 15, 2023, and the adoption of the quarantine is recommended for August 17, 2023.
Detailed information on the proposed quarantine and how to provide comments can be found at https://www.mda.state.mn.us/eab
Addressing the threat of EAB requires swift action and collective efforts. The MDA urges residents to stay informed and actively participate in safeguarding their environment from the devastating impact of the emerald ash borer.
