MARL Inspires Growth in Rural Leadership

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership (MARL) program has played a key role in strengthening leadership within the state’s agriculture and rural sectors. Since its launch in 2000, the program has graduated over 380 participants who have gone on to positively influence their communities.

Founded through a collaboration between Southwest Minnesota State University, the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and University of Minnesota Extension, MARL offers a two-year immersive experience focused on leadership, communication, and community engagement. Participants benefit from diverse educational experiences, both in the classroom and in the field, including travel to rural and international locations.

One of the program’s goals is to develop leaders who are confident in their abilities to influence change. “It is very rewarding when I see MARL participants and alumni confident in their abilities to lead wherever they are and make a positive difference,” says a MARL program leader.

Participants also build valuable professional networks. By sharing experiences and learning from peers across Minnesota, many alumni have been able to apply their insights directly to their careers, helping address agricultural challenges with fresh perspectives.

Communication and self-awareness are also core parts of MARL training. Members participate in peer coaching groups and take personal assessments to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This helps them better understand and adapt to different viewpoints and communication styles.

The program’s emphasis on storytelling and empathy helps build bridges across diverse perspectives. Many alumni now serve in leadership positions, including the Minnesota legislature, using these skills to guide thoughtful decisions.

Despite the time commitment, graduates agree that the experience is life changing. They gain confidence, lifelong connections, and the tools needed to lead effectively in agriculture and rural life.

MARL continues to grow strong leaders who are shaping the future of Minnesota’s communities.
