Minnesota Adds Support for Farmers

Minnesota Adds Support for Farmers

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture added a new Farm Advocate to its statewide support network as part of its continued effort to help producers face financial stress. The program focused on offering free confidential and compassionate assistance to operations impacted by economic pressure or natural disasters.

Based in northwest Minnesota, Ron Dvergsten joined 11 other Farm Advocates who provided one on one support to producers experiencing financial challenges. The services were confidential and offered at no cost, ensuring producers could seek help without added burden during difficult times.

“I have worked in agriculture here in northwest Minnesota my entire life,” said Ron. “I understand the area and its diversity, having spent the majority of my career as an ag lender and Farm Business Management instructor, so I’m eager to serve Minnesota producers through the Farm Advocate Program.”

Farm Advocates such as Ron assisted producers with financial planning, lender negotiations, and understanding farm programs. They worked closely with individuals to prepare for and attend mediation sessions and helped them think through options related to bankruptcy and foreclosure. Advocates also provided guidance on state and federal programs and offered referrals to legal, social, and human services when needed.

“Farmers are facing many financial pressures, from high input costs to low market prices and everyday living expenses, but they don’t have to go it alone,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “If you feel your farm operation slipping underwater, it’s good to call a Farm Advocate as soon as possible.”

The Farm Advocate Program had been supported by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture since 1984 and was created in response to the farm crisis of the 1980s. Over the decades, advocates have helped thousands of Minnesota producers manage stress, protect their operations, and plan.

All Minnesota farmers were encouraged to directly contact a Farm Advocate closest to them for assistance. Additional information and contact details were made available through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture website.
