MDA Exhibit Brings Agriculture to Life for Fairgoers

MDA Exhibit Brings Agriculture to Life for Fairgoers

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will once again welcome fairgoers to its interactive exhibit at the 2025 Minnesota State Fair. Open daily, the exhibit helps families of all ages learn how agriculture connects to daily life through activities, games, and farmer engagement.

One highlight is the “read and grow” story time, held twice each morning throughout the fair. Sponsored by Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom, this program introduces children to agriculture-themed books, guest readers, and a free bookmark with a QR code linking to more reading resources.

Fairgoers can meet members of the Minnesota Grown program to learn how local farmers produce food and manage their farms. The Minnesota Grown in Your Home exhibit showcases local food options, while visitors can also vote for favorite ways to support farmers and receive a free Swedish dishcloth. Signing up for the Pick of the Month newsletter gives families a chance to win a basket of Minnesota Grown products. Fun extras, such as temporary tattoos, allow guests to show their support.

The exhibit also raises awareness about invasive pests and noxious weeds, including emerald ash borer and spongy moth. A prize wheel with kid-friendly questions, Junior Entomologist kits, and insect repellents make learning about pest control fun.

In addition, the MDA’s Emerging Farmers Office will provide resources for new and diverse farmers, offering information on land access, grants, and programs. The office will also feature a prize wheel this year.

Located in the Agriculture/Horticulture Building’s North Hall, the exhibit runs August 21 through September 1, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and until 8 p.m. on Labor Day.

This year’s MDA State Fair exhibit combines fun, learning, and farm connections, ensuring families leave with both memories and knowledge about agriculture.
