MDA introduces free succession planning support for Minnesota farmers

MDA introduces free succession planning support for Minnesota farmers

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has taken a significant step to support farmers and agricultural landowners in planning the future of their properties.

Recognizing the importance of farm succession, the MDA has appointed Jim Molenaar as the coordinator for its farmland access and succession teams. This initiative is a boon for those seeking guidance in transitioning their farmland to the next generation.

In his new role, Molenaar will serve as an advocate and guide for farmers and landowners throughout the succession process. His responsibilities include assembling a team of professionals such as legal experts, accountants, and farm business management instructors to facilitate successful farm transitions.  This comprehensive support service is offered at no cost to participants.

Molenaar brings a wealth of experience to his position. He is not only a seasoned Farm Advocate for the MDA but also a retired instructor for the Farm Business Management program. His expertise lies in aiding Minnesota farmers facing crises due to natural disasters or financial challenges.

This initiative addresses a pressing need, as the average age of Minnesota farmers has climbed to 57.4 years, according to USDA data. The MDA's efforts in this area are multifaceted. In addition to succession planning support, the department also manages the FarmLink program, which connects those seeking agricultural land or operations with retiring farmers and landowners.

The MDA offers financial incentives like the Beginning Farmer Tax Credit and the Down Payment Assistant Grant programs to foster the transfer of agricultural land and operations to new and emerging farmers.

The introduction of this role and the services offered by Molenaar underscore the MDA's commitment to ensuring the continuity and resilience of Minnesota's agricultural economy through smooth and effective farm succession planning.
