The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will offer free nitrate water testing during Farmfest 2025, which runs from August 5 to August 7 at the Historic Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Farmfest attendees can visit the MDA booth (#517S) to test their private well water for nitrate and learn about various agriculture support programs.
Nitrate-nitrogen, commonly called nitrate, is a compound of nitrogen and oxygen. It occurs naturally in groundwater but becomes a health concern when levels exceed 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L). The MDA encourages attendees to bring a sample from their private well for testing to help ensure safe drinking water.
To participate in the free clinic, follow these simple steps:
- Run your faucet for five to 10 minutes.
- Collect at least one cup of water in any clean, sealable container such as a jar or Ziploc bag.
- Keep the water sample chilled and visit the MDA booth early.
- Testing takes less than five minutes.
No personal information is collected, and test results are provided directly to the participants. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends private wells be tested every one to two years for nitrate, which can come from sources like fertilizers, septic systems, or urban runoff.
In addition to the water testing clinic, the MDA booth will feature information on key initiatives such as the Rural Finance Authority Loan programs, Minnesota Ag Weather Station Network, MDA grant opportunities, Ag Water Quality Certification Program, and rural mental health support.
This free service highlights the importance of water safety and awareness, while also promoting sustainable practices and helping Minnesota’s agriculture communities through helpful state programs and resources.
