MDA promotes green fertilizer projects

MDA promotes green fertilizer projects

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has introduced a significant initiative aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture through the Green Fertilizer Grant Program. Announced by MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen at the Green Ammonia Summit in Morris, MN, this program is designed to bolster local production of environmentally friendly fertilizers.

Starting December 18, the MDA will accept applications from agricultural and rural electric cooperatives registered under sections 308A or 308B in Minnesota. These grants, ranging from $250,000 to $6,665,000, will target business-ready and shovel-ready projects set to innovate in the green fertilizer sector. The deadline for applications is March 18, 2025.

Eligible cooperatives must demonstrate a commitment to long-term sustainability practices, including securing offtake agreements with green fertilizer production facilities. Furthermore, these facilities must adhere to strict environmental standards, utilizing electrolyzers that match their electricity consumption with renewable energy sources like wind or solar, or are directly connected to these renewable facilities.

Commissioner Petersen emphasized the dual benefits of the program, noting that local production of green fertilizers not only stabilizes prices and supplies but also positions Minnesota as a leader in agricultural technology and sustainability. This initiative is particularly focused on green nitrogen-based fertilizers, which offer significant environmental advantages by reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil-fuel-derived options.

The Green Fertilizer Grant Program aims to encourage wider adoption of renewable energy in agriculture, reflecting Minnesota’s commitment to innovative and sustainable farming practices. The program details and application guidelines are available on the Green Fertilizer Program Grant webpage, with MDA also offering email alerts to keep potential applicants informed.

This grant represents a proactive step towards enhancing agricultural sustainability in Minnesota, supporting local farmers in reducing their environmental footprint while maintaining efficient production levels.
