MDA Shares Inspection Safety Tips

MDA Shares Inspection Safety Tips

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) reminds agricultural businesses to stay alert and informed during inspection season. The Pesticide and Fertilizer Management Division conducts inspections across the state to protect public health, the environment, and worker safety. These inspections also ensure that businesses follow state and federal laws.

As inspection activity increases each season, businesses should understand what to expect. During a visit, inspectors may check licenses and credentials, including those for commercial and private applicators or dealers. They also review records related to pesticide and fertilizer purchases, storage, and use.

Inspectors carefully examine storage areas, bulk tanks, and safety systems. They look at secondary containment, spill response tools, personal protective equipment, and labeling. If needed, they also check compliance with Worker Protection Standards. In some cases, inspectors follow up on complaints, misuse reports, or incidents such as spills.

The MDA strongly advises businesses to verify inspectors before allowing access. Official inspectors always present a valid state-issued photo ID with MDA branding and a badge number. They clearly explain the purpose of the visit and provide a written Notice of Inspection. This document explains the legal authority of the inspection and the rights of the business.

Inspectors also offer a business card or contact details for follow-up questions. To confirm their identity, businesses can call the phone number listed on the back of the inspector’s ID. If anything seems suspicious, it should be reported to local law enforcement immediately.

By following these steps, businesses can protect themselves from fraud and ensure smooth inspections. Staying informed and prepared helps maintain compliance and supports a safe working environment.

For further questions, businesses can contact the MDA directly through the provided phone number or email. Clear communication and proper verification help build trust and ensure successful inspections.
