Minnesota Crops Starting to Show Signs of Drought Stress

Minnesota crops are showing signs of drought stress. U-S-D-A’s latest weekly crop report says nearly half the topsoil in the state is short to very short on moisture, and most of the subsoil moisture is considered short to adequate.

Corn emergence is virtually complete and 67 percent of the crop is in good to excellent condition. Soybeans are 98 percent emerged with 67 percent considered good to excellent.

For small grains, more than half of the spring wheat, barley, and oat crop are at the jointing stage or beyond, with condition ratings ranging from 58 to 67 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeets are 27 percent good and 66 percent excellent. And the first cutting of alfalfa is nearly wrapped up, with the second cutting just underway.
