Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year Contest Celebrates Local Grocers

Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year Contest Celebrates Local Grocers

Minnesota Grown and the Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA) have launched the 2023 Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year contest, celebrating retail grocery and liquor stores that offer products from local farmers and producers. The contest runs from August 1 to September 29, showcasing a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, dairy, packaged goods, and beverages from Minnesota farms.

The award judging criteria include the number of Minnesota Grown farms and products available, innovative promotional displays featuring the Minnesota Grown logo, and marketing activities highlighting local products on social media and print. Retailers participating in the contest not only boost sales but also contribute significantly to their communities by making fresh, locally grown foods accessible to consumers.

A recent consumer survey revealed that 80% of consumers recognize the Minnesota Grown brand, associating it with freshness, quality, community, and health. By choosing products with the Minnesota Grown logo, shoppers can show their support for local farms and the retail stores that carry these products.

In addition to other associated marketing initiatives, participating merchants may select a one-week showcase during the contest time for a concentrated promotional push in their store. At the completion of the competition, regional winners and the "People's Choice" photo contest winner selected by online voting will be declared.

The Minnesota Grown program, driven by collaboration between farmers and retailers, aims to bring wonderful local products to customers. It also fosters relationships between grocers and farmers in the community, further promoting fresh, nutritious, and locally sourced foods.

Visit the Retailer of the Year contest webpage to submit entries by October 13, 2023, through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's online grants portal. Contact Jennifer Alexander at jennifer.j.alexander@state.mn.us. for inquiries.

Celebrate retailers' efforts in providing quality local products to consumers!
