Minnesota Uses Planes For Pest Control

Minnesota Uses Planes For Pest Control

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is preparing an important aerial management program to reduce the spread of spongy moths across southeastern regions. These operations will cover 19 selected sites across Fillmore, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona counties. The treatment is expected to take place between June 24 and July 1, depending on weather conditions, and may begin as early as 6:30 a.m.

The targeted treatment area covers approximately 112,211 acres, including parts of cities like Austin, Goodview, Rochester, Stewartville, and Winona. Residents can check whether they are part of the treatment zone by visiting the MDA website or using the interactive map.

The project uses a method called mating disruption, which involves spraying a wax-based, food-grade substance containing pheromones. These pheromones disrupt the mating cycle by confusing male moths, making it difficult for them to locate females. As a result, fewer caterpillars will hatch the following season, reducing damage to trees.

Low-flying yellow aircraft, contracted by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, will carry out the spray operations. Officials have confirmed that the substance used is not harmful to humans, animals, birds, or other insects. This approach helps protect forests, maintain property value, and support tourism.

Residents can stay updated through a helpline at 1-888-545-6684 or sign up for notifications via the official management map. They can also track progress in real time. Public awareness and participation are important for the success of this initiative.

Spongy moths are a serious threat, causing large-scale damage to trees. This proactive step by the authorities aims to slow their spread and safeguard Minnesota’s environment.
