Minnesota's Early Teal Hunting Season Clashes with Wild Rice Harvest

Minnesota's Early Teal Hunting Season Clashes with Wild Rice Harvest

Minnesota's early teal hunting season, an experimental initiative running from September 2nd to 6th, coincides with the ripening of wild rice. As a result, hunters should be particularly aware of wild rice harvesters.

On the reservation of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, specific rules have been established for hunters. Within half a mile of identified wild rice beds, hunting is prohibited. The White Earth Nation may also set restrictions on the White Earth Reservation. For clarity on these regulations, hunters are advised to reach out to the Leech Lake Division of Resource Management and the White Earth Division of Natural Resources.

Given the overlap of numerous water-based activities, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) emphasizes the significance of safety. Leslie McInenly, from the Minnesota DNR, suggests that a proactive safety approach is crucial. With water levels being unpredictable, both hunters and ricers should scout areas in advance.

Minnesota's participation in the early teal season is experimental, sanctioned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The 2023 season marks Minnesota's third year. As part of this, Minnesota DNR observers will monitor hunters' activities closely.

McInenly emphasizes the significance of species identification and safe hunting practices for waterfowl. Information on species identification and general waterfowl hunting details can be found here.

The DNR is translating 2023 regulations into multiple languages for a wider reach.
