New Tariffs Add Stress on Farmers

New Tariffs Add Stress on Farmers

By Scout Nelson

Federal policy changes are leaving Minnesota farmers in a challenging position as they face new tariffs and unclear USDA funding. Recent moves from the administration, including a new round of tariffs, have created uncertainty for agricultural producers across the state.

Economists from the American Farm Bureau Federation say the tariffs and potential retaliation from trade partners could hurt U.S. agricultural exports, especially in beef and pork markets. These changes affect both production decisions and sales strategies for farmers and ranchers.

Many operations are also experiencing delays in federal grants that support local food programs. Without clarity on whether funds will be released, producers are unsure whether to invest in more livestock or expand their production.

“Do we go and purchase more laying hens? Do we purchase broiler chickens to be processed later on?” one producer asked. “Those all are uncertainties right now.”

This hesitation in purchasing affects more than just farms—it impacts local processors and other connected businesses in the food supply chain. Experts say that without consistent aid, farmers may reduce production or delay necessary investments.

Some emergency funding that had been frozen during federal downsizing efforts has now been partially released. However, the lack of communication and detail about future grants continues to create stress.

“The very fact that this money that is legally due to them is being held up and they're not getting any answers on when they might receive it, if at all, it's creating inordinate stress that really is completely unnecessary and damaging to our entire food system,” said a spokesperson from Farm Aid.

Rising interest rates add more pressure. Farm leaders warn that if the situation continues, it could resemble the 1980s farm crisis, when many farms were lost due to financial strain and economic uncertainty.
