Join the National Mastitis Council (NMC) for its next webinar – “Selective Dry Cow Therapy: Does it Make ‘Cents’ for Your Dairy Operation?” – on April 25, presented by Daryl Nydam, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. The free, one-hour webinar starts at 2 p.m. Central time (USA/Canada).
For decades, dairy producers have used blanket dry cow therapy, where every quarter of every cow was treated with antibiotics at dry-off. While this strategy may be viewed as a proactive practice, it can also be viewed as overuse of antibiotics. As dairy operations improve udder health and milk quality, it’s time to consider selective dry cow therapy (SDCT). Learn what factors to consider when evaluating SDCT – at the herd level and cow level.
Nydam earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of New York at Geneseo and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and PhD in epidemiology from Cornell University. Currently, he serves as a professor of dairy health and production in Cornell University’s department of population medicine and diagnostic sciences and director of Quality Milk Production Services. Nydam leads the Advancing One Health working group as the David Drinkwater faculty director. His research interests are at the intersection of production animal agriculture and public health at the population level, with an emphasis on dairy cattle. His ongoing research projects include milk quality, transition cow health and performance, and calf infectious diseases – particularly zoonoses.
