A queen rearing workshop offers a valuable learning experience for beekeepers who want to improve their skills. This program focuses on teaching one proven method of raising queen bees. It suits both small backyard beekeepers and large commercial operators. The course combines classroom learning with field practice to give a complete understanding.
Participants take part in several hands-on activities. They learn to graft larvae, prepare a finishing colony, and handle a swarm box. These activities help build confidence and practical knowledge. The workshop ensures that every attendee actively participates and develops skills that can be used in real beekeeping situations.
The program expects participants to have basic knowledge of honeybee biology and hive structure. It is best suited for people with at least one year of successful beekeeping experience. Completing a course on beekeeping in northern climates is also recommended for better understanding.
The training covers important topics such as queen and drone biology, timing for queen rearing in colder regions, and how to set up mating yards. It also highlights the importance of record keeping in managing bee colonies. These lessons help participants understand the full process of queen production.
To attend, participants must be 18 years or older. They should bring a notebook and pen for notes. Protective clothing like a veil, bee suit, or jacket is required for safety during field work. Gloveless beekeeping is encouraged to improve handling skills.
The workshop costs $100, and registration is required. Interested individuals can register at the link: https://learning.umn.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?
