Register for Nitrogen Smart Pre-sessions at Minnesota Ag Expo

Nitrogen management is vitally important to quality crop growth and sustainable farming practices. Minnesota Corn is bringing the University of Minnesota Extension class Nitrogen Smart to you during the upcoming Minnesota Ag Expo.

This special pre-session gives attendees the opportunity to dive into nitrogen management and how growers can better understand application factors such as weather and soil types to get the most out of their fertilizers while remaining environmentally conscientious. Led by University of Minnesota Extension Educator Brad Carlson, these Expo pre-sessions qualify for continuing education credits.

Two sessions will be held, back-to-back, on Jan. 17 starting at noon with A Deep Dive into the 4Rs, followed at 3 p.m. by Adapting N Management to Climate. You can choose to attend one or both sessions. If you register to attend the first session, lunch will be provided around 11:30; a snack will be provided at the second session.

A Deep Dive Into the 4Rs

This training starts where the original Nitrogen Smart ends. Begins with a detailed discussion on N rate, the contributions from soil and the stress from climate factors. Types of N fertilizer are examined in detail with respect to how they behave after application. Nitrification and urease inhibitors are discussed with respect to how they perform best, when they are warranted, and when they don't pay. Research regarding fall, spring, and side dress timing is examined. The session concludes with tips on placement specific to various types of fertilizer. CEUs: 2 nutrient management (NM), 1 soil and water (SW).

Adapting N Management to Climate

The effectiveness and advantages of various N management practices are dependent on climatic conditions. Furthermore, N loss is driven by water (specifically soil saturation). This training looks at average climate conditions including soil temperature, soil moisture status, precipitation, and evapotranspiration together with an eye on calendar date. The implications of deviation from average are discussed with respect to adjusting N management practices based on condition. CEUs: 2 nutrient management (NM), 1 soil and water (SW).

If you wish to attend the Nitrogen Smart pre-sessions, you must register for them in addition to registering to attend Minnesota Ag Expo. Please submit your registration for the Nitrogen Smart sessions now at https://z.umn.edu/ANSMankato. Registration deadline is Jan. 9.
