For five decades, The Food Group has worked with communities across Minnesota to combat hunger and improve food access. While its programs have evolved over the years, food remains at the heart of the organization’s mission.
The organization was founded in 1976 when 17 food shelves in Hennepin County joined forces to share resources and strengthen hunger-relief efforts. That collaboration became the Emergency Food Shelf Network, now known as The Food Group.
Today, The Food Group partners with more than 400 food shelves across Minnesota, including all of its founding food shelves that are still operating. The organization continues to serve as a key resource and support network for hunger-relief programs statewide.
As food insecurity challenges changed, The Food Group expanded beyond traditional food banking. Its efforts grew to include broader food system initiatives focused on improving access to nutritious food and creating long-term solutions.
In 2002, the organization launched Fare For All, a mobile grocery program that provides affordable produce and meat to rural communities. In 2020, it introduced the Twin Cities Mobile Market to bring healthy food options to neighborhoods with limited grocery access.
The Food Group also prioritizes nutritious and culturally relevant foods. By increasing access to fresh produce, quality proteins, and culturally connected food options, the organization aims to improve both food security and community well-being.
In 2017, The Food Group expanded into agricultural development through farmer training and land-access programs. These initiatives help emerging farmers gain the resources, education, and opportunities needed to build sustainable farming businesses.
More recently, the organization strengthened its policy and advocacy work through a merger with Hunger Solutions. This expanded its ability to address food insecurity through both direct services and systemic change.
As food assistance demand continues to rise due to inflation, higher food costs, and ongoing barriers to access, The Food Group remains focused on collaboration, food equity, and building a stronger, more resilient food system for future generations.
