At the 2023 UMN Extension Dean’s Distinguished Awards Banquet, Dr. Lee Johnston was celebrated as an Outstanding Extension Faculty member. Dr. Johnston's career, spanning over 35 years, has been instrumental in advancing pig farming in Minnesota through his extensive research in nutrition and management.
Dr. Johnston has established himself as a progressive leader in the field, with his research and educational programming encompassing areas like enhancing swine production expertise, delivering national pork quality assurance, promoting the use of renewable energy in swine production, and elevating agricultural literacy among non-farm citizens.
Throughout his illustrious career at Extension, Johnston has demonstrated exceptional skill in creating innovative, timely, and research-driven programming. His academic contributions include over 140 journal articles, six book chapters, numerous Extension publications, and articles in popular press. He has been a keynote speaker over 50 times both nationally and internationally.
Johnston, a distinguished faculty member, has demonstrated his dedication to academia beyond research by advising and mentoring graduate students and colleagues. His outstanding contributions to agricultural extension and research were recognized at the UMN Extension Dean's Distinguished Awards Banquet.
