A community seed swap event is scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. Central time. It will be held at the University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center in Minneapolis. The event welcomes people interested in gardening, native plants, and learning more about starting seeds successfully. The seed swap is organized by the Twin Cities Metro Growers Network and the MN SEED Project as part of their seasonal collaboration.
Participants are encouraged to bring collected seeds from native plants, annual flowers, fruits, vegetables, and herbs to trade or give away. However, no one is required to bring seeds in order to participate. MN SEED will also provide native seeds for those who want to try growing local plant species. Seed packing supplies will be available at the event.
Educators will be present to explain important topics such as how to start plants from seed and why native plants help pollinators and ecosystems. Native plants play an essential role in supporting insects that help crops grow, making them useful in both gardens and farm landscapes.
This seed swap is part of a larger series of workshops held during fall and winter. These workshops focus on collecting, cleaning, and sowing native seeds. The goal is to help people learn how to grow native plants that support local landscapes. The Twin Cities Metro Growers Network collaborates with the Sustainable Farming Association and the University of Minnesota Extension to make these learning opportunities available.
The event is funded through a Twin Cities Urban Agriculture microgrant from Renewing the Countryside and the USDA Farm Service Agency. The event is free for all participants, and registration is requested only to assist with planning. Walk-ins are welcome.
The University of Minnesota Extension ensures equal opportunity in its programs. Individuals needing accommodation are encouraged to contact the event organizer at least two weeks before the event. Interpreter services may also be available with advance notice. The event will be presented in English.
