The University of Minnesota Extension Pesticide Safety and Environmental Education team has launched a new resource for the public about pesticide safety.
Pesticides are categorized by the pest they control. They include germ-killing household cleaners and disinfectants, insect repellents, pet products, rodent baits, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and more. They have an important role in our everyday lives. They are also important for controlling disease-carrying insects and destructive pests in our landscapes, homes, and environment.
Many pests found in our homes and landscapes can be controlled without chemicals, but sometimes pesticides are necessary.
This new resource offers information on how to protect people, pets, wildlife, and the environment by using, storing, and disposing of pesticide products safely.
The new pages feature:
- How to read a pesticide label. The information on the label is the most important aspect of pesticide safety.
- Pesticides and health plus safety resources for schools, daycares and health professionals.
- An online search tool to find licensed pesticide applicators and great questions to ask them before hiring a pest control professional.
- Pest prevention methods and how to select pesticide products when needed in your yard and garden.
- In the event of pesticide illness or injury to people, pets or in the environment, there is a list of who to call.
