State Maps Growing Knotweed Infestations

State Maps Growing Knotweed Infestations

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture reports a major increase in knotweed infestations across the state. In 2018, 493 locations were identified with knotweed. As of now, that number has surged to 3,374 mapped infestations. This sharp rise highlights the need for ongoing attention and coordinated efforts to control the spread of this invasive plant.

Knotweeds, which include species such as Polygonum x bohemicus, P. sachalinese, and P. cuspidatum, are listed on Minnesota’s Noxious Weed List. These plants are perennial, meaning they return each year. They can grow quickly—up to 15 feet tall—and spread through seeds, plant fragments, and underground stems. This aggressive growth pattern allows them to outcompete native plants and take over large areas of land.

What makes knotweed especially concerning is its ability to damage infrastructure. The plant can grow through concrete and asphalt, causing serious damage to sidewalks, roads, and buildings. This makes early detection and quick management even more important.

Despite the growing number of infestations, there has been strong progress in managing knotweed in Minnesota. Many groups, agencies, and individuals are working together to map infestations and share control strategies. This team effort is essential in understanding where the weed is spreading and how best to treat it.

Control methods often include digging out the roots, using approved herbicides, and educating communities about how to prevent spreading the plant further.

“Across the state, many groups, organizations and individuals have come together to work on knotweed infestations. Together, there’s been a lot of progress with knotweed mapping and management.”

Through continued mapping, awareness, and management, Minnesota is making strides in protecting its land from the harmful impacts of knotweed.
