The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Region Five Development Commission (R5DC) have added two new agricultural mental health counselors to support farmers and rural communities across the state. These additions follow the retirement of a longtime counselor who served Minnesota’s farm families for over 30 years.
The agricultural mental health support program is funded by the Minnesota Legislature through R5DC. It provides free, confidential mental health services to farmers, farm families, agricultural workers, and advisors statewide.
“Farmers are tough, but it’s not an easy profession,” said Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen. “From unpredictable weather to rising input costs, farmers face an enormous amount of stress. Sometimes, just a few conversations with someone who understands can really help.”
The program now includes three experienced professionals who understand rural life and its unique challenges. They offer phone, video, or in-person sessions across Minnesota:
- One counselor, serving Northern Minnesota, specializes in treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.
- Another, based in Southern Minnesota, focuses on trauma, stress, and suicide prevention in rural communities.
- The third counselor, already supporting Western Minnesota since 2019, helps individuals and families manage ongoing agricultural stress.
“In rural communities, stress and isolation can take a heavy toll,” said R5DC Executive Director Cheryal Hills. “Bringing Jenifer and Tracie on board with Monica helps R5DC continue its commitment to supporting farm families and agricultural professionals.”
These counselors provide long-term, flexible support and also offer workshops and education for community groups.
Visitors to Farmfest 2025 can learn more about farm stress resources at the MDA Tent and Farm Safety Pavilion. Free gun locks and helpful printed materials will be available. One counselor will be present on August 6 to meet visitors and answer questions.
Farmfest runs August 5–7, 2025, at the Historic Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls. Visit the MDA booth at #517S.
