Boosting Minnesota Ag education - $145K in grants available

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council (MAELC) is now accepting grant applications for over $145,000 in two competitive areas: Strategic Initiatives and Common Fund.

The initiative aims to advance agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) education across the state, fostering significant advancements.

Prospective applicants should mark their calendars; all submissions must be completed online via the official MAELC grants page by midnight on April 15, 2024. This opportunity is a signal for local and statewide organizations aiming to broaden their AFNR programming reach, as stated by Sarah Dornink, the Executive Director of MAELC.

The Common Fund grants focus on projects with a statewide impact, particularly those aligning with the goals of the 2025 Minnesota AFNR Education Blueprint.

Innovators and thinkers are encouraged to bring new ideas to the table to enhance instructional quality, expand student engagement, and elevate the overall understanding of AFNR education.

On the other hand, Strategic Initiative grants are tailored to underpin access to AFNR education, improve existing programs, and offer professional development for teachers. This arm of funding supports educational efforts at all levels, from primary to postsecondary, across Minnesota.

Since its inception, MAELC has been a crucial source of financial support for the agricultural education sector, disbursing almost $26.5 million in grants, scholarships, and awards, courtesy of funding from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

For those looking to make a difference in Minnesota's agricultural education landscape, more information and the application process can be found at www.mn.gov/maelc/grants.html.

This initiative is not just about funding; it's a call to action for educators, innovators, and organizations across Minnesota to contribute to the growth and evolution of AFNR education, shaping the future of the industry for generations to come.

"MAELC’s grant program allows us to reach our mission of promoting and expanding agriculture, food and natural resources (AFNR) education across the state." This mission underscores the council's commitment to fostering a vibrant, knowledgeable, and sustainable agricultural community in Minnesota.
