Mental Health Care Tailored for Farmers

Mental Health Care Tailored for Farmers

By Scout Nelson

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize efforts to support mental wellbeing. In Minnesota, Ted Matthews is honored as he retires after more than 30 years dedicated to helping farm families manage mental health challenges.

Matthews began his career when a new mental health care model was created in the 1990s, supported by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the state legislature. This model focused on meeting farmers where they were, respecting their unique challenges, and providing counseling without complex paperwork, insurance demands, or cost.

Farmers often face higher rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide than the general population. The National Rural Health Association reports suicide rates among U.S. farmers are 3.5 times higher than average. Matthews stressed that even without a diagnosis, the ongoing pressures of farming can harm health and relationships.

Throughout his career, Matthews offered guidance to individuals and families dealing with anxiety, loss, isolation, and trauma. He helped farm couples under strain, families mourning loved ones lost to suicide, and those forced to depopulate animals during disease outbreaks. His support provided hope and healing in difficult moments when few others could assist.

“Ted’s impact on rural mental health in Minnesota can’t be overstated. He has brought hope and healing to many in crisis with humility and heart.” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen.

As Matthews retires, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture invites those touched by his work to share memories or well wishes via email or phone.

Matthews’ career highlights the vital need for mental health support tailored to the farming community, offering compassionate care without barriers. His legacy will inspire continued attention to farm family wellbeing in rural Minnesota and beyond.
