Explore small grain farming at summer plot tours

This summer, small grain farmers and crop consultants have a unique opportunity to deepen their expertise through free plot tours. These events are designed to support the successful and profitable production of small grains including wheat, barley, rye, triticale, and oats.

Participants will have the chance to view up to 180 different grain varieties directly in the fields. Each tour includes hands-on demonstrations where farmers can engage actively and consult with experts from the University of Minnesota (UMN).

These sessions are crucial for addressing key concerns such as pest and disease management, especially following a record warm winter and a wet spring.

The tours also focus on critical areas like crop variety selection and issues related to herbicide carryover. Attendees are encouraged to bring field samples, whether for diagnosis or as a basis for discussion.

Here are the details for the upcoming tours in Southern Minnesota:

• Rochester: Monday, June 17, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Lawler Farms. A boxed lunch will be served prior to the tour.
• Le Center: Wednesday, June 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Ruth Hoefs/Ron Pomije Farm. Lunch will be available at the farm shop post-tour.
• Benson: Later the same day, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lee’s Seed Farm, with brats served afterward.

No registration is required for these events. This is an excellent opportunity for small grain farmers to gather practical insights and network with peers and specialists in an engaging, educational environment.
