Free Farm Transition Workshops in Minnesota

By Scout Nelson

Minnesota farmers facing the complex challenge of farm transition can find substantial support through the Multigenerational Farm Transition Retreats. These retreats are specifically designed to aid farm families in developing comprehensive succession plans.

This invaluable opportunity is provided by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Extension and the Southern Agricultural Center for Excellence.

The retreats focus on practical, hands-on planning and discussion vital for all generations involved in the farming operations.

Participants will delve into key areas such as setting family and business goals, defining job responsibilities, and discussing the financial needs of both the farm and the family members.

Additionally, the retreats will cover inheritance issues and the mechanisms available for transferring farm ownership smoothly and effectively.

Offered free of charge, the retreats are scheduled in three different locations across Minnesota, ensuring accessibility for all interested farm families. Each location offers a two-day session, with comprehensive discussions facilitated by experienced agricultural professionals.

These sessions are designed to encourage participation from all family members actively engaged in farm management, promoting a holistic approach to farm succession.

The dates and venues for the retreats are as follows:

  • Mankato: February 21 (5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.) and February 22 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
  • St. Cloud: March 7 (5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.) and March 8 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
