The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has opened applications for its Green Fertilizer Grant Program, offering financial support to expand clean fertilizer production. The program is designed to encourage the use of renewable energy in manufacturing nitrogen-based fertilizers, which are essential for agriculture.
The initiative has a total fund of up to $3.8 million. Eligible agricultural and rural electric cooperatives registered as 308A or 308B in Minnesota can apply. Each project can request funding between $250,000 and $3.8 million. The last date to apply is July 15, 2026, by 4 p.m.
Green fertilizers are made using water, air, and renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. This reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions and helps protect the environment. The program aims to promote cleaner agricultural practices while helping rural communities grow economically.
“Fertilizer is one of the largest input costs for many Minnesota farmers,” said MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen. “Investing in local production of green fertilizer can help strengthen supply chains, support rural economic development, and create new opportunities for farmers to access the products they need closer to home.”
The department is mainly focusing on projects that are ready to begin quickly, also known as shovel-ready projects. This ensures that the funds are used efficiently, and results can be seen in a shorter time.
By supporting local production, the program also aims to reduce dependency on imported fertilizers. This can help make supply chains stronger and more reliable, especially during times of global uncertainty.
The Green Fertilizer Grant Program plays an important role in reducing pollution and promoting sustainable farming. It also creates opportunities for innovation and job growth in rural areas.
